The Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line will shut down temporarily this summer for crews to make important updates to the infrastructure. Here’s what you need to know:

Beverly Drawbridge Construction – July 17th – August 13th
There will be a 28-day shutdown on all commuter rail service North of Salem Station to replace the swing span on the Beverly Drawbridge, which allows boats to travel between the Atlantic Ocean and the Danvers and Bass Rivers. During this time, the MBTA will provide free weekday shuttle buses from the Salem Station. Parking will be free at all stations North of Beverly Depot and no rider will pay more than the Zone 3 rate. Positive Train Control (PTC) Systems Upgrade – July 8th – September 30th
There will be a suspension of weekend Commuter Rail Service on the entire Newburyport/Rockport line to allow crews to install new PTC systems, a federal mandated upgrade that will prevent train derailments and collisions. During this time, the MBTA will provide shuttle bus service between North Station and select stations along the Newburyport/Rockport line for $10/roundtrip (shuttle service will be free for up to two children 11 and under per paying adult).
